Salmonella: A Persistent Threat in Our Environment and How to Stay Safe
Salmonella bacteria seem to be everywhere these days-from the foods we eat and pets we keep to the surfaces we touch and places we enjoy outdoors. This widespread presence has led to multiple outbreaks reported across the U.S. so far in 2026.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 10 Salmonella outbreaks this year linked to diverse sources including jalapeño peppers, backyard poultry, shell eggs, moringa leaf powder, and reptiles like turtles, chameleons, geckos, and bearded dragons. In recent years, outbreaks have also been connected to home-delivered meals, dry dog food, cantaloupe, cucumbers, onions, alfalfa sprouts, basil, flour, raw cookie dough, various meats, and nut-based spreads.
While the number of outbreaks in 2026 appears notable, CDC data shows that these figures are consistent with trends from the past five years. However, concerns remain that reduced federal oversight of food safety could increase risks in the future.
Salmonella ranks as the second most common foodborne illness globally. In the U.S., it infects approximately 1.35 million people annually, leading to about 26,500 hospitalizations and 420 deaths each year.
These numbers may be underreported since many mild cases go unreported. Vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience severe symptoms and seek medical care.
The economic impact is also significant, with estimated annual costs of $2.4 billion in medical expenses and lost productivity.
Why Is Salmonella So Widespread?
Salmonella naturally resides in the intestinal tracts of humans, animals, insects, and birds. Once excreted, it can contaminate the environment-soil, water, plants, and surfaces-where it can survive under favorable conditions for extended periods.
The bacteria thrive in temperatures between 95 and 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit and prefer neutral acidity and high humidity. Remarkably, Salmonella can adapt to a wide range of environments, surviving in temperatures as low as 35.6°F and as high as 129.2°F, as well as in highly acidic or basic conditions.
This adaptability explains its persistence in various settings, including recreational waters and irrigation sources, which can lead to contamination of crops through roots or damaged plant tissues.
How Does Salmonella Infection Occur?
There are over 2,500 Salmonella strains, but about 100 cause illness in humans. The most common types, Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium, are responsible for the majority of infections worldwide. Infection typically happens via the fecal-oral route, when the bacteria pass from feces of infected people or animals into another person’s mouth.
Symptoms usually begin 8 to 72 hours after exposure and last about 3 to 5 days. These include severe stomach cramps, watery diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), headache, nausea, and loss of appetite. A particularly dangerous strain, Salmonella Typhi, causes typhoid fever; a small percentage of infected individuals become carriers who can shed bacteria for years, posing ongoing public health challenges especially in parts of Africa and South Asia.
Preventing Salmonella Infection
Understanding common sources and routes of Salmonella transmission is key to reducing risk. Proper hygiene and food safety practices are essential:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using the restroom, before handling food, after touching animals or their environments, and after contact with potentially contaminated surfaces.
- When swimming in natural bodies of water, avoid swallowing water and shower with clean water afterward to minimize contamination risks.
- Clean and sanitize all surfaces that come into contact with raw meats, eggs, or other potentially contaminated foods.
- Wash produce under running water and use a brush for firm-skinned items to remove dirt.
- Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw and cooked foods separate.
- Cook meats and eggs to their safe minimum internal temperatures (e.g., 145°F for whole meats, 160°F for ground meats, and 165°F for poultry and leftovers).
- Refrigerate perishable foods promptly and keep them below 40°F.
- Keep food preparation areas and eating spaces separate from areas housing backyard poultry and reptiles; wash hands after animal contact.
- Handle pet food cautiously and keep children away from pet feeding areas.
While completely eliminating Salmonella from the environment is not feasible, following these practices can significantly reduce illness risks and help prevent the spread of this persistent bacterium. Public health efforts combined with individual vigilance remain vital to safeguarding communities from Salmonella infections.
