Following a front-page Wall Street Journal article claiming Syracuse University can’t attract enough students, Chancellor Michael Haynie sent a public message to reassure the community that the university is fiscally sound.
On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal published an article detailing the issues SU faces when attracting students, such as its near $70,000 tuition and its falling academic rating. This past spring, SU missed its enrollment target which resulted in a $30 million deficit on its $2 billion budget.
“As I’ve made clear before, because we are financially and structurally strong, our annual 1.5% operating deficit is far from a crisis,” Haynie wrote in an email to students and staff. “Demand for a Syracuse education has never been our problem.”…
