SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — It’s not just you—Salt Lake City apartments are smaller than they were a decade ago, and they’re smaller than most apartments across the country.
That’s according to a report published by RentCafe, an apartment aggregator. The website’s Apartment Size Report analyzed new apartments across the 100 biggest cities in the United States. That data ranks Salt Lake City #95 for apartment sizes, close to dead last. The report finds new units average at 728 square feet, which is 182 square feet behind the national average of 910 square feet.
That’s not all—over the past 10 years, Salt Lake City apartments have shrunk by 64 feet on average. Nationally, it’s the opposite, where apartments grew by 13 square feet just last year.

RentCafe says the city’s average apartment size is skewed by an explosion of studios and one-bedroom apartments. Studios now make up 19% of new apartments built in the past decade, up 4% from the previous decade. Those new studios are also smaller by about 80 square feet…
