A soldier stationed at Fort Knox has died after engineering equipment fell on them during a motor pool incident on Tuesday morning, the U.S. Army confirmed. Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 10:30 a.m. and provided immediate medical care before the soldier was transported to UofL Hospital in Louisville, where they were later declared dead.
A motor pool is a facility where military units maintain and service vehicles, equipment, and machinery, and it was there that the equipment fell onto the soldier, according to a U.S. Army spokesperson who spoke with WHAS11. The Army believes the incident was accidental, though the report provided no further details about the specific equipment involved or how it moved. Col. David T. Holstead said in a statement, “We are saddened by the death of one of our own as a result of this tragic event today.”
In keeping with military protocol, the Army has withheld the soldier’s identity while next of kin are notified. Under Department of Defense Instruction 1300.18, a deceased service member’s name cannot be publicly released until at least 24 hours after that notification is formally completed, according to the Defense Information School. The timing of any public release was not specified.
