Leon County Sheriff’s Office set to stop using license plate readers

LEON COUNTY, Fla. — License plate readers have helped Leon County investigators recover stolen vehicles, develop leads and find missing people, but the Leon County Sheriff’s Office is preparing to stop using the technology at the direction of Sheriff Walt McNeil.

Just last week, the agency pointed to results from the readers, saying the technology helped recover more than 100 stolen vehicles last year alone and develop leads in cases where investigators started with little information. Leslie Rabon, Executive Director of the Intelligence Operations and Analysis Division, said, “Just last year alone, just through license plate reader technology, we recovered over 120 stolen vehicles.”
