Abraham Lincoln said it best: “Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration.”
Lincoln made those remarks as the first Republican president of the United States, and, as we celebrate Labor Day this coming Monday, it is important to remember that leaders of both parties were once ardent supporters of the rights of workers to organize unions and collectively bargain for better pay and conditions.
Unfortunately, those days are gone…
