A garbage truck caught fire behind Edison Elementary Tuesday, forcing firefighters to cut into the truck to reach the burning material before its load could be dumped.
Eugene Springfield Fire Battalion Chief Ed Meyer said crews responded to a report of a trash truck on fire behind the school. When firefighters arrived, the truck’s hydraulic system was not working, preventing the load from immediately being dumped.
Crews cut a hole in the top of the truck to get water onto the fire. Meyer said the sanitation company was eventually able to get the hydraulic system working, allowing firefighters to dump the entire load…
