SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing plans to investigate a contamination site in Schenectady. Public input is welcome through the beginning of October.

The nearly-2.5-acre site is located at 750 State Street, in the city’s Hamilton Hill neighborhood. A majority of the property reportedly comprises an asphalt parking lot with smaller areas of gravel and grass.
According to NYSDEC, the site had previously been used as an auto sales, services and repair facility, including a paint spraying shop. The auto repair business reportedly closed in 2022, leaving the property unoccupied since.

Previous studies of the location have reportedly found several chemicals and metals in both on-site groundwater and soil, including mercury and lead. Further investigations will work to determine the nature and extent of the contamination, NYSDEC said.
The investigation is set to be led by Albany State Street Limited Partnership under state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program. The organization reportedly hopes to redevelop the site into a one-story Save A Lot grocery store and a four-story multifamily residential building with a playground.
