SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 43-year-old man, who is a Mexican citizen and San Diego resident, appeared in federal court Wednesday for allegedly smuggling banned pesticides into the United States, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
The suspect was reportedly apprehended at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in August with 24 liters of dangerous Mexican-labeled pesticides concealed in his vehicle, the DOJ says.
According to the report, the man did not declare the chemicals at the border and then allegedly asked a Customs and Border Protection officer not to refer him to secondary because he knew he would get in trouble.
He reportedly admitted later that this was not the first time he had smuggled the banned pesticides, and, according to the DOJ, he expected to be paid a smuggling fee upon delivery…
