SALEM, Va. – A raccoon found in the Salem area has tested positive for rabies, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
Health officials say the raccoon was discovered on Aug. 26 near Green Ridge Road and Dalewood Avenue.
To help prevent the spread of rabies, health officials urge residents to take the following precautions:
- Avoid contact with wild animals and unfamiliar domestic animals.
- Report any injured or threatening animals to authorities.
- Make sure your dogs, cats and ferrets are vaccinated against rabies, and keep their vaccinations up to date.
- If you are bitten or scratched by an animal that may have rabies, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water. Stay calm, and contact your doctor and the local health department right away.
