- Burning Man Festival evicts Christian missionary group after they ‘violate event policies’ (themirror.com)
The Burning Man festival, known for its commitment to radical inclusion and creating a welcoming environment for diverse communities, recently faced controversy involving a Christian missionary camp. The 10-day desert gathering, scheduled for August 30 to September 7, 2026, prides itself on being open to all; however, the camp Shift the Atmosphere was asked to leave the event after alleged violations of festival policies.
Camp member John Hinerman shared on Instagram that their group was asked to pack up within three hours and exit the playa. The reason, according to Burning Man officials, stemmed from complaints about the camp’s behavior-specifically, filming attendees without consent and urging them to “receive a blessing,” actions that go against the event’s strict privacy guidelines. Burning Man spokesperson Dominique Debucquoy-Dodley emphasized the importance of respecting participants’ privacy, noting that the camp received several warnings but continued to disregard the rules, leading to their eviction.
The Christian missionaries reported that they had baptized over 600 attendees using small water tanks on the playa. However, some festival participants pointed out on social media that communal use of water for such activities might violate Nevada state health regulations, which prohibit public pools or showers at the event.
Other festivalgoers also weighed in on the situation. Jenae Gertsmann described the camp as distributing coffee and matcha accompanied by loud Christian EDM music, which led to requests for the volume to be lowered.
Positioned across from the Kidsville camp, Shift the Atmosphere reportedly engaged with younger attendees in ways that some found intrusive. One 12-year-old who has attended Burning Man every year shared that he was offered a beverage only after listening to prayers and receiving a pamphlet bearing a religious message.
This incident highlights the ongoing balance Burning Man strives to maintain between fostering an inclusive atmosphere and enforcing community standards designed to protect participants’ privacy and well-being.
