SUMMERVILLE, South Carolina — Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday he hoped to endorse in the San Francisco congressional race to replace Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and that he would likely do so as part of a batch of endorsements in California races.
The race has become a highly contentious contest between two Democrats: state Sen. Scott Wiener and Supervisor Connie Chan.
Pelosi herself has endorsed Chan, who has racked up a list of high-profile endorsements from the speaker emerita’s allies, including Sen. Adam Schiff, former Sen. Barbara Boxer, Rep. Jared Huffman and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, the influential chair of the California Democratic Congressional Delegation. Rep. Ro Khanna has also endorsed her campaign, as have former Mayors Willie Brown and Art Agnos.
