Health officials warn of harmful algae in Hampton Lake in Portage

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — As health officials warn people to stay out of one Portage lake due to concerns about harmful algae, they are giving the all-clear for another.

Hampton Lake tested positive Thursday for microcystin, a toxin produced by harmful algae, the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department said.

The department issued a public health advisory for the suspected harmful algal bloom, warning the toxins can make people and pets exposed to contaminated water sick with gastrointestinal, respiratory and skin problems. Some severe cases can cause neurological problems or organ damage…
