Claire Amable never learned to drive. Growing up in the Tenderloin with access to Muni and a bike, she never felt it necessary. Now she’s director of advocacy at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (opens in new tab), a fitting role for someone who relies almost completely on two wheels to get around.

Amable’s dad, a former bike messenger, taught her to ride. “He set me up on a bike — I might’ve been 6 or 7,” she says. “I learned in the basement garage of my apartment.” Since then, she’s become one of a growing number of San Franciscans who rely on a bike for transportation.
