Aurora, IL: Semi Truck Crash Shuts Down I-88, Causes Hours of Traffic Backups

A crash involving a semi-truck brought traffic on Interstate 88 to a crawl Thursday afternoon after the truck struck a bridge in the western suburbs of Chicago, triggering lane closures and delays that stretched for miles.

What Happened at the Scene

Illinois State Police responded to the three-vehicle crash around 1:50 p.m. near the bridge that carries railroad tracks over the interstate. Officers confirmed the semi truck hit the bridge structure during the collision.

One person involved in the crash was taken to a local hospital for treatment, though the extent of the injuries has not been released.

By 2 p.m., authorities had shut down several lanes as crews worked to clear the scene and assess the damage to the bridge. For nearly two hours, all lanes in the affected stretch were blocked, forcing drivers to use the shoulder to get past the wreck.
