Dr. Phil McGraw weighed in Saturday on the Lindsay Clancy trial, a day after a judge declared a mistrial when jurors couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict in the case involving the deaths of Clancy’s three children.
The 36-year-old mother admitted to strangling her children-Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months-in 2023. Her defense argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time and was not in control of her actions.
Speaking with Fox News anchor Aishah Hasnie on “Fox News Live,” Dr. Phil emphasized the importance of focusing on the three innocent children who lost their lives. “You can never explain these situations away simply,” he said.
Dr. Phil expressed concern about how mental illness is portrayed in courtrooms, warning it often becomes a “political, ideological football” rather than a clear look at the facts.
He stressed that regardless of the trial’s outcome, accountability will come. “Even if she’s not found criminally responsible, she’s not going home,” he noted, saying Clancy would likely remain in a psychiatric facility.
Highlighting the severity of postpartum psychosis, Dr. Phil compared it to a brain tumor, explaining how such conditions can hijack a person’s mind. He stressed this isn’t an excuse but a factor in understanding causation.
While he said Clancy should be held accountable, Dr. Phil criticized the prosecution’s presentation as “pretty clunky,” noting the defense’s explanation was more coherent. He also voiced concerns about potential “copycat” incidents and urged careful consideration of the cultural impact.
Dr. Phil clarified the crucial difference between postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, calling the latter a psychiatric emergency requiring immediate hospitalization and separation from children-not just medication adjustments or routine appointments.
He described Clancy’s case as a “psychiatric emergency that wasn’t treated as such.” While acknowledging the case could serve as a teachable moment, he cautioned against glorifying Clancy. “There’s nothing to be celebrated here,” he said, emphasizing this was a tragic failure despite Clancy asking for help and admitting herself to a hospital.
Dr. Phil believes the jury was inclined toward a long-term commitment for Clancy and warned against losing sight of the children who died. “Mental illness is a serious, serious issue,” he said.
He urged the public to focus on lessons from the case, noting such tragedies occur “one or two times out of 1,000,” which, while rare, is still too many and preventable. His message was clear: recognize the warning signs, provide timely intervention, and encourage those struggling to reach out for help. “It’s not weakness, it’s strength,” he concluded.
