A driver was killed, and a passenger was hospitalized Friday afternoon after a single-vehicle crash on Sevierville Pike in South Knox County, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The wreck happened around 3:53 p.m. in the 6511 block of the winding rural road, which connects South Knoxville to Sevier County.
The identities of the driver and passenger are being withheld until next of kin can be notified, per the WVLT report on the crash. The passenger was transported to a hospital in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said, and WBIR reported that the passenger was taken specifically to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Deputies are still working to determine what led up to the crash.

The crash lands just days into a leadership change at the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Newly elected Sheriff Brent Gibson took office on September 1, succeeding term-limited Sheriff Tom Spangler only three days before this fatal wreck occurred, according to WIVK-FM’s coverage of the swearing-in.
