STATEWIDE — September is Suicide Awareness Month and to raise money and support, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosts its signature Out of the Darkness walks.
Lisa Matway, co-chair of the Oakland/Rochester/Macomb community walk, said the AFSP started in 1987. At that time, they mostly conducted research about suicide prevention. She added in an email that the Out of the Darkness walks started in 2004 as a way to bring awareness to suicide prevention and to give support to those affected by it.
