Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry has begun rebuilding and expanding Veterans Restoration Quarters at 1329 Tunnel Road, replacing the veterans facility severely damaged by Hurricane Helene. ABCCM marked the start of construction with an Aug. 13 groundbreaking, nearly two years after the storm.
Helene sent more than eight feet of floodwater through the property on Sept. 27, 2024, severely damaging the 250-bed complex. The facility had provided veteran housing and restoration services since 2008, making its loss a major disruption for veterans and service providers in Buncombe County.
In the immediate aftermath, veterans, staff members, volunteers, churches, nonprofits and government agencies worked to move residents to safety and continue support.
