DETROIT — The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes touched down in Metro Detroit Thursday, when a wave of storms swept across Michigan, damaging buildings and trees, and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people.
A EF2 tornado touched down in Detroit’s east side, with speeds up to 115 mph, traveling about 3.5 miles from Hancock Road near Ellery Place, and continued to Belle Isle.
The city said the tornado was the first confirmed within the city of Detroit since 1997.
