ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New video shows the moment that led to Albuquerque police arresting a man, charging him under Bennie’s Law. Police said his eight-year-old cousin got hold of his gun and shot herself in the leg.
It’s a shocking 911 call for Albuquerque police over an eight-year-old girl shooting her own leg. On April 27, Police arrested 26-year-old Isaiah Chavez for leaving his gun out on a kitchen counter, saying it allowed it to be easily accessed by a child. The child is Chavez’s cousin; he tells police he was asleep when his cousin got it and shot herself.

The eight-year-old was treated at UNM Hospital. In the meantime, the detective questioned Chavez on how the night unfolded. Around 6:30 am Chavez told police he heard a loud noise while asleep. Chavez said he was in shock seeing his cousin bleeding and went to get help from his mother, who then called 911…
