Fayetteville and the Fayetteville Metropolitan Housing Authority secured $25,115,578 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Monday, Aug. 31, according to a news release. The money will transform the Murchison Townhouses public housing site into mixed-income apartments. This marks the first Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant awarded to an eastern North Carolina community.
The federal dollars will draw more than $531 million in combined public and private money to replace all 60 units at the 56-year-old site. Plans call for 323 new apartments spread across Murchison Townhouses and Elliott Properties. Each public housing unit will be replaced.
New homes will feature washers and dryers inside each unit, pantries, gardens, a park, picnic spots, a fitness center, art murals, and improved lighting. Residents who qualify can return to the affordable replacement apartments within these new communities…
