KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — After state literacy testing showed a decline in third-grade proficiency, Michigan’s governor says new programming will take time to address the slide.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer visited Woods Lake Elementary School in Kalamazoo alongside State Sen. Sean McCann and State Superintendent Glenn Maleyko on Tuesday.
The visit highlighted the message “Every Kid Eats, Reads, Succeeds.” It came days after results were revealed from this spring’s Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP.
Results showed a slide of less than a percentage point in English Language Arts proficiency among the state’s third graders. 38.2% of third graders were proficient compared to 38.9% last year…
