ANN ARBOR, MI — Ann Arbor is moving forward with selling the city-owned Kline’s lot on the west side of downtown to a luxury housing developer.
City Council voted 10-0 Tuesday night, Sept. 8, to approve a sales agreement with the Hines development firm, despite objections from some community members who have wanted the city to keep the Ashley Street property for affordable housing.
Council members observed there have been decades of talk about the site’s future. They said it’s time to put it to a higher and better use than a parking lot.
“At the end of this project, there will be hundreds of new neighbors in our downtown, there will be hundreds of new customers, hundreds of new patrons, hundreds of new people enlivening our community,” Mayor Christopher Taylor said. “And that is something truly to be excited about.”…
