Walking through Worcester at night, depending on the neighborhood you’re in and the street you’re on, there’s a small chance you might pass through the soft, warm glow cast by one of the city’s 27 remaining gas-powered streetlights.
“Part of it is the warmth and tone of the light, and the other part is the pole. You usually see these in older neighborhoods, and the pole, when you can get them combined with trees and bricks in the road, adds an ambience that just looks and feels nice,” said Jay Mello, assistant commissioner at the City of Worcester engineering department. “It’s a throwback to a quieter time.”
