The upscale Mexican restaurant Otra (opens in new tab) on Haight will close in early December, owners Nick Cobarruvias and Anna Sager Cobarruvias confirmed to The Standard. The staff was alerted to the news early this week.
Cobarruvias and Sager Cobarruvias say the decision comes in part so they can focus on their two kids and salsa macha business Chingonas (opens in new tab). (opens in new tab) But what sealed the deal was a usual summer slowdown that was a bit too slow. They hope Otra will continue in some form, though they’re not sure what that will look like. “It’s reflective, if anything,” Cobarruvias says. “There’s no real smoking gun. It’s good to go out before you’re forced out, so to speak.”
The serendipity of it all echoes how Cobarruvias and Sager Cobarruvias ended up there in the first place. The Otra location became available thanks to their landlord’s familiarity with the couple’s first restaurant, Son’s Addition, which closed in 2021. It was there that Cobarruvias’ cooking exploded into the San Francisco scene with fresh-made masa wrapped around summer squash and pickled onion, and grass-fed, white cheddar burgers slathered in bacon-onion marmalade.
The couple signed the lease for Otra in January 2020, and the pandemic launched them into an experience that required constant flexibility. (One day, Cobarruvias remembers, the oven overheated, and every dish and glass in the restaurant exploded.) But during the last six years, the couple saw the neighborhood — they lived just two blocks from Otra for years — mature into a true dining destination. Ultra-hip cocktail bar Stoa opened kitty-corner to the restaurant in 2023, followed by Bar Jabroni next door in 2024. Pizza hot spot Jules opened three blocks away in May 2025…
