(Plattsmouth) — Cass County authorities are investigating a fatal collision between a vehicle and train that occurred near Plattsmouth early Thursday morning.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded shortly before 6 a.m. for reports of a crash that occurred at a Union Pacific Railroad crossing just east of the intersection of 12th Street and Church Road between Plattsmouth and Murray.
Upon a preliminary investigation, authorities say a Texas-plated Mazda SUV was westbound when it collided with a northbound Union Pacific train at the railroad crossing. The sheriff’s office says the two occupants of the SUV, 73-year-old Vernon Hays and 22-year-old Gabriel Johnson, were pronounced dead at the scene.
