TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A man who was called a Good Samaritan by the city of Troy for rescuing a child said his heroism was instinct.

8-year-old Amarys Lopez went missing went missing from her family during a dinner celebration Saturday night in Downtown Troy. The apartment building the family was at is right next to the Hudson River, and Amarys, who’s non-verbal, is attracted to water. Michael Schnoop, a friend of the family, said something spoke to him that night.
“Something brought me to the river,” he said. “Then I asked two girls if they had seen a little girl, and they pointed to the corner of the lot over there [next to] building four, but I knew there was a hole over there.”

Amarys’ family, including her grandmother, Luz Rodriguez, were terrified, frantically looking for her.
“I’m already calling 911, there’s no time to lose here,” Rodriguez said. “She loves the water, so I immediately thought she might go and we didn’t know what door she went through.”
