Ex-Bristol town councilor accused of abuse died by suicide

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Former Bristol town councilor David Barboza had all the hallmarks of a model citizen. He served the town as a police officer, volunteer firefighter, Democratic Town Committee member, and administrator at St. Mary’s Church, and was even named chief marshal of the iconic Fourth of July Parade back in 2014.

But when the 71-year-old was found dead by suicide in his Constitution Street home last weekend, he had also been accused of sexual abuse by multiple boys and men, dating back to the 1970s.
