Body cam footage shows Syracuse police arrest man in 2023 who later died of overdose

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The New York State Attorney General’s Office released bodycam footage of Syracuse police arresting a 23-year-old man in May 2023 who later died of an overdose.

Alex Rivera died on May 31, 2023, at the hospital. Police had arrested him earlier after they were called to a house on Teall Avenue, where Rivera was lying on the bathroom floor. They ordered Rivera, who was visibly and audibly high on drugs, to stand up, and he refused. Police were initially called to the house for a report of someone damaging property.

Attorney General Letitia James’ office released three videos from Syracuse police body cams. A statement from James’ office said the release was to “increase transparency and strengthen public trust in these matters.”…
