MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For many Mid-South families, a backyard barbecue is a way of life. But doctors say a tiny tick common across Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi could suddenly force some people to give up burgers, steaks, ribs, and pulled pork for years.
Health experts are warning about Alpha-Gal Syndrome, a growing tick-borne allergy that can make eating red meat trigger serious and sometimes dangerous allergic reactions. Cases are being diagnosed throughout the Mid-South, where the Lone Star tick is widespread.
