NEWTON, Iowa — The former chief of the Baxter Police Department pleaded guilty to lesser charges on Monday after initially facing counts of first-degree theft and felonious misconduct in office for falsifying timesheets.
William Daggett, 59, the former police chief of both Baxter and Van Meter’s departments, struck a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to non-felonious misconduct in office, a serious misdemeanor, according to court documents. The theft charge was dismissed by the court.
The court delivered the minimum penalty of a $430 criminal fine. Daggett is also ordered to pay a 15% crime services surcharge and court costs. No probation or jail time was ordered, documents show. The max penalty for the charge was 12 months of jail time and a $2,560 fine…
