MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tennessee and Arkansas leaders are inviting the community to give their feedback on the planned new I-55 bridge. Architects of the project want to build a bridge that can reliably connect Arkansas and Mississippi for generations to come.
“This bridge is over 75 years old, and it has just served its life purpose,” explained Nichole Lawrence, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “It’s time to update and replace this bridge.”
The current bridge was built in 1949. Lawrence said it was not built to interstate standards. It was also built in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. That means it likely would not withstand a potential earthquake that could strike the region…
