Two motorcycles collided on I-85 Northbound at Shallowford Road in DeKalb County, sending three people to area hospitals with serious injuries early Wednesday. One of the motorcycles caught fire during the crash, and emergency crews split the injured between hospitals in Atlanta and Gwinnett County.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the DeKalb Fire Department reported that three people were hospitalized after the two motorcycles crashed. One motorcycle was carrying two riders at the time, while a single rider was on the second bike, the station reports. All three suffered serious injuries, and the second motorcycle showed visible damage after the wreck.
Emergency crews transported one injured person to Grady Memorial Hospital, while the other two were taken to hospitals in Gwinnett, per the station’s report. Grady’s Marcus Trauma Center is Metro Atlanta’s only nationally verified Level I Trauma Center, treating more than 150,000 emergency department patients a year, according to the Emory School of Medicine. Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, which received two of the crash victims, is Gwinnett County’s sole state-designated Level II Trauma Center and handles more than 2,100 trauma cases annually along the I-85 corridor, according to Northside Hospital.
