CHICAGO — A Maserati. A luxury condo.
These are a couple of the indulgences Chicago landowners Suzie B. Wilson and her sister Swedlana Dass allegedly paid for with millions of dollars illegally raked in from more than 1,000 neglected and distressed properties they owned throughout the South and West sides, according to a new complaint filed by the city against the mega-debtors.
In 2023, Block Club and the Illinois Answers Project first revealed that Dass and Wilson — dubbed “the city’s worst landowner” — had accumulated $15 million in rat-related fines. The city then filed several multimillion dollar lawsuits against the sisters for neglecting their properties to the point where they had become overgrown dump sites for tires and junk cars.
Now, drawing on half a million pages of documents, including Wilson’s and Dass’s bank records and emails as well as written admissions by their accountants, city attorneys say the sisters were not just negligent property owners and landlords, but orchestrators of an elaborate shell company scheme…
