Missouri educators react to risk of funding shortfall for public schools

REPUBLIC, Mo. — Educators are reacting to the Missouri Board of Education’s decision to not recommend a funding increase for the 2028 fiscal year.

On Tuesday, the board directed the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to keep its foundation-formula request at $4.28 billion, the same level as the current fiscal year.

Officials say it falls short of what’s now needed to fully fund the formula, which calls for about $300 million more than current funding; a gap made up of roughly $190 million from this current fiscal year…
