HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Today the man who shot and killed a UNC professor on campus was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Dr. Zijie Yan was shot in an office on campus in 2023. Defense attorneys did not refute that Tailei Qi, a former student and lab researcher with Dr. Yan, pulled the trigger. In Orange County Court on Friday, forensic psychologists detailed extreme hallucinations Qi suffered in the months leading up to the shooting.
