At the Sept. 8 Loganville City Council meeting, the council voted to direct the city government staff to research the installation of traffic-calming measures — speed tables, roundabouts, chicanes and similar projects — in other jurisdictions, to get an idea of what those jurisdictions have paid for that work. The decision came in the wake of a report from City Attorney Paul Rosenthal, who had been asked by the council to look at traffic-calming regulation.
In a somewhat related development, Councilwoman Melanie Long had asked for consideration of lowering the speed limit on Covington Street, where she is a resident, from the posted 30 miles per hour to 25 mph. According to a report to the council from Assistant City Manager Jeff Smith, the city’s engineering firm looked at the request, and found that current traffic speeds on the street range largely from 30 mph to 35 mph, a range that does not support lowering the speed limit…
