LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Summer wasn’t quite ready to let go just yet. Friday afternoon brought one last blast of heat before a cold front moves through Friday night, ushering in much cooler air for the rest of the weekend and beyond.
Occasional shower and storm chances start Friday evening and last through the weekend, too.
Storms Arrive Friday Night
A cold front will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms Friday evening around 5-7 p.m. While most storms should be weak, a few isolated strong wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible, especially in southwest Nebraska.
A second round of showers moves in overnight into early Saturday morning as the front stalls across the area. By then, storm chances will be lower, but expect cloudy skies and occasional light rain.
For Husker fans: The end of the game Saturday evening looks to trend drier, so you should be in better shape as the day goes on.
Saturday: Cooler and Cloudier
Saturday will be noticeably cooler and cloudier, with highs only in the mid-to-upper 70s and continued chances for showers, especially in the afternoon. This is a dramatic shift from the 90s we were experiencing Friday.
The Big Cooldown: Sunday and Beyond
By Sunday, the cooldown really kicks in. Highs will only reach the low-to-mid 60s, and many areas may only see 60 degrees on Monday. This much cooler air mass settles in and sticks around.
Through the weekend, heavier rainfall is in the forecast for western Nebraska as several rounds of showers and storms roll off the Rockies and higher terrain.
Eastern Nebraska could see anywhere from a tenth to three quarters of an inch, with locally higher amounts possible toward far southeast Nebraska (next to the Kansas/Missouri border).
The cooler pattern continues through much of next week. Highs will remain in the 60s and low 70s, with periodic chances for rain Sunday, Monday, and again Thursday and Friday…
