Lexington mother turns son’s death by suicide into legacy of awareness

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Four and a half years after losing her 24-year-old son to suicide, Leilani Gilbert is keeping his memory alive by helping others and raising awareness about suicide prevention.

Caleb Pitts died by suicide on March 15, 2022. Since then, Gilbert has organized an annual dart tournament in his honor, bringing together friends, family and members of the community to remember Pitts and support causes that are meaningful to the community.

“We do this just to try to spread awareness of suicide, that there doesn’t always have to be the true signs and symptoms that everybody in the past has seen,” Gilbert said.

Each year, proceeds from the tournament are donated to a different charity. This year, the money is going to the Down Syndrome Association of Kentucky…
