Sept. 11, 2001. Lest we forget. I’ve told my story a number of times but in honor of the 25th remembrance of that horrific day, I’ll risk repeating myself.
I arrived at my office in South Hackensack, NJ shortly before 9 a.m., and was greeted by my friend Jan with the news that a plane hit the World Trade Center. My first thought was that a small plane must have had an accident. We went to the conference room to watch the news just as a large plane came into view, headed to the second tower. The screen went black before it was impacted. We didn’t know what was going on.
Jan was in a panic. His daughter worked in the World Trade Center for Cantor Fitzgerald. Her cell phone was being repaired, and her office number was not ringing. He didn’t know if she was in the North or South Tower, or which floor. His wife couldn’t get through. We were directly across the Hackensack River and so we went to the roof, where we had a bird’s eye view of the two burning buildings…
