FOLSOM — Serial killer Wesley H. Shermantine, whose drug-fueled killing spree across San Joaquin and Calaveras counties earned him and his partner the notorious nickname the “Speed Freak Killers,” died Thursday, Sept. 17 while incarcerated at California State Prison, Sacramento, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. He was 60.
Shermantine was pronounced dead at about 6 p.m. Thursday by a doctor at SAC. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine his official cause of death, the CDC said in a statement released Friday. Shermantine was received from Santa Clara County on May 18, 2001, and placed on condemned status for first-degree murder.
