(NewsNation) — The shooting of Wilber Rafael Garces Perez Sunday in Texas marks at least the ninth time this year an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has been involved in firing a weapon during the course of federal immigration-related operations.
Garces Perez, 28, was shot in the back by an ICE officer in Austin after running from a traffic stop. He is now in federal custody at the South Texas Detention Center, where he was transferred from an ICE processing center early Monday morning and is being interrogated by federal investigators, his attorney said.
The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating the shooting. Officials said Garces Perez will remain in federal custody pending his deportation.
