Select regions within the Duke Forest will be closed from Sept. 21 to Dec. 11 for the 19th annual deer herd reduction program.
As part of the program, the Durham, Korstian and Blackwood divisions of the forest will be closed to public access and recreation on weekdays, allowing for select highly skilled bowhunters to control the local white-tailed deer population. The Dailey division will be fully closed until Jan. 1, 2027 for similar deer herd reduction efforts.
“Duke Forest’s hunting program remains one of the most important stewardship activities we conduct every year,” Director of Duke Forest Sara Childs wrote in an email to The Chronicle. “While we cannot control what happens in the future, we can all work together to ensure that the best available information and science guide us in supporting a regenerating and resilient Duke Forest.”…
