Buffalo man charged after string of burglaries

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Buffalo man is facing charges after several burglaries were reported at worksites downtown, Buffalo police said Thursday.

Police said a burglary detail was assigned in the area of the 400 block of Niagara Street after two burglaries were reported at the Hispanic Heritage Cultural Institute construction site earlier this month. Detectives encountered a suspect in the secure construction site with burglar tools and stolen property shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Michael Hillyard, 33, has been charged with the following:

  • Third-degree burglary (one count)
  • Fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property (one count)
  • Possession of burglar tools (one count)
  • Third-degree criminal trespassing (one count)

An investigation into the other reported burglaries in the area remains ongoing. Police said additional charges may be filed.
