SNELLVILLE, Ga. (Atlanta News First) -A Gwinnett County mother has taken her fight over her autistic son’s education to federal officials, alleging both his school district and the state agency responsible for overseeing it have repeatedly failed to follow and enforce federal special education law.
For Wendy and Anthony Cogan, speaking publicly carries an added concern: Anthony Cogan teaches eighth-grade language arts for Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), the same district being challenged over their son Breck’s education.
Wendy Cogan said the couple worried about possible professional consequences for her husband but ultimately decided their concerns were bigger than their own family. “I had to get to the place where it really didn’t matter,” she said. “What I very quickly learned is it’s bigger than even my kids.”…
