Kanye West made a surprise appearance Friday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, joining Chris Brown and Usher for the first of their Los Angeles shows on The R&B Tour. Wearing his signature mask, Ye performed four songs, Runaway, All of the Lights, Flashing Lights and Can’t Tell Me Nothing, while the stadium sang every word back to him. It was his first reported performance since he closed his Soldier Field homecoming in Chicago on Sept. 4.
Most of the viral clips miss one detail. Three days earlier, Ye stood silently on a South Shore corner in Chicago as the city unveiled Dr. Donda West Way in honor of his late mother. Every song he chose at SoFi came from the two albums on either side of her death.

He performed four classics. Can’t Tell Me Nothing and Flashing Lights come from Graduation, released in September 2007. All of the Lights and Runaway come from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, released in 2010. Nothing from the last decade made the set, so the crowd got the Kanye a whole generation grew up on.
