Inspired by his experience volunteering with the homeless and housing-insecure people in Berkeley, Neil Rao decided to spend his summer analyzing nearly half a million records from the San Francisco Rent Board. In doing so, the junior at San Mateo High School inadvertently highlighted how little San Francisco knows about its rent-controlled units.
Now he wants to dig deeper and fill gaps in the city’s records.
Rao pulled around 463,000 public records from the Rent Board, including tenant complaints, landlords’ annual disclosures, and move-out notifications. Rao then used Claude to geocode the records as a way to visualize the city’s tenant protections…
