CHICAGO (WGN) — Of all the food you might find at nearby food banks, the food for thought at the Greater Chicago Food Depository is what is still being digested by some.
State, local, and nonprofit leaders reviewed a study by the food depository along with the University of Chicago. It details that about 1 in 3 Chicago households are food insecure, meaning no consistent access to enough food. About half of families with children are food insecure. About a third of Chicagoans, like Natalie Morehead, delayed, reduced, or skipped utility or medicine payments to pay for food.
“I had to decide whether we were going to eat or whether my son was going to get his heart medication that he takes monthly. I do have a disabled child, and just knowing that I had to do that, and with everything going on, it’s definitely scary,” said Morehead, lamenting that it’s been difficult to make ends meet caring for her son, Nicholas Jermaine Brown, who is living with Down’s syndrome and a heart condition.
