Jeff Knight pushes to keep prior boating accident out of Clearwater Ferry crash trial

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A motion was filed on behalf of the captain who crashed his boat into the Clearwater Ferry in 2025, preventing the state from introducing another crash as evidence in the ongoing trial.

The motion was filed on behalf of Jeff Knight, the former owner of Jannus Live who crashed his boat into the Clearwater ferry in April 2025, killing one man.

The memorandum, filed in the Circuit Court of the Sixth Judicial Circuit of the State of Florida in and for Pinellas County, calls for the state’s prohibition on introducing any evidence, testimony, or argument concerning a prior boating accident.

The prior accident refers to an incident from Sept. 2, 2019 wherein Knight was charged with careless operation of a vessel after, according to the document, “allegedly failing to maintain a proper lookout and becoming involved in an accident causing injury.”…
